Volunteer Cleanup September 25th!
Wednesday, September 01, 2010 - 02:19 PM

Start a Sea of Change!

Help clean up trash from Utah’s water ways and beaches on Saturday, September 25th, and increase the quality of life for all of Utah!

Join volunteers around the world, and in Utah, in picking up trash during the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) – the world’s largest trash clean up day.

In partnership with the Utah Division of Water Quality, Water Environment Association of Utah, North Salt Lake City, Salt Lake City Open Space, Wasatch Mountain Club, adjacent landowners, and the Legacy Nature Preserve, we invite you to join us on a beautiful section of the Jordan River. This area was inundated during the historic flooding of Great Salt Lake and is situated between Salt Lake and Davis County. Extensive efforts upstream have finally removed the trash that had built up in the river over the last half-century. Many miles of river have already been cleaned! We are planning to clean the garbage and debris from the remaining 20,000 linear-feet of the Jordan's riverbanks and Great Salt Lake's shoreline. We will also be removing noxious plants and restoring native ecosystems by spreading native seeds and transplanting wetland vegetation. Enthusiastic volunteers are needed!

Be sure to wear weather appropriate clothing including long-sleeve shirt and pants. Sturdy shoes, rubber boots or waders may be the most appropriate footwear. Bring work gloves and hat (if you own them), water and a snack.  Sunscreen and mosquito repellant are recommended and will be provided on site. Lunch will be provided for those who sign up in advance. All ages are welcome, but please leave your dogs at home to reduce potential impacts to migratory birds. The event will be from 9 AM to 3 PM on Saturday September 25.

Hope you can make it! Please feel free to pass on this information to any other interested parties. Please direct any questions regarding project specifics to Eric McCulley, Legacy Nature Preserve Manager, at emcculley@swca.com .
