Public Works

11
  • Yes, curbside recycling is available to all residential customers. Per contractual agreement with Wasatch Integrated Waste Management, all new customer accounts are required to "opt-in" to curbside recycling services effective August 15, 2024.

    Public Works
  • Yes. If every city in the District implemented a curbside collection program the life of the landfill would be extended by approximately 2 years. When the landfill is full we will need to transfer our waste to a regional landfill some distance away at an increased cost of $15 to $20 per ton. Remember, the curbside program costs $150 to $200 per ton. Extending the life of the landfill does provide a benefit, but taken alone does not justify the added cost of curbside collection of recyclables.
    Public Works
  • According to recent EPA life cycle analyses (see above reports) recycling of waste materials has a lower impact on the environment than incineration with energy recovery, which provides substantial benefit over landfill (as described in the EPA solid waste management hierarchy). However, recycling and waste-to-energy are not mutually exclusive, and each is best applied to a different subset of the wastes we generate. After all recyclable materials are removed from the waste stream there is still plenty of waste which can be processed in our waste-to-energy facility. I suggest that recycling, particularly a curbside collection program, should be considered on its own merits, as another method of disposing of our waste. These are some links with more information about waste-to-energy.

  • As a member of Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District, your city is one of the most progressive cities in Utah when it comes to environmentally responsible management of your solid waste. The district operates a modern waste-to-energy facility which uses your waste to supply heat to Hill Air Force Base offsetting the combustion of natural gas. Other programs and projects operated by the district include a landfill gas to energy project, green waste recycling, household hazardous waste recycling and disposal, steel recycling, and availability of recycling bins for residential use. This system currently keeps about 50% of the waste generated in the district from ending up in the landfill. The average recycling rate in Utah is about 5%. More information about the system operated by Wasatch Integrated can be found at: Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District.

Code Enforcement

1
  • The City North Salt Lake's ordinance require all weeds to be cut and maintained at a height not exceeding six (6) inches. The Code Enforcement Officer of the City of North Salt Lake is responsible for the enforcement of the weed ordinance. When he receives a complaint, he makes an on-site visit to verify the violation. He then contacts the owner of the property by mail to inform him/her of the violation and instruct them to cut the weeds. A reasonable amount of time is given the property owner to do so. If the owner complies, the problem is resolved for now. However, weeds continue to grow and they may require two or three cuttings during the season. If the owner does not comply, the Code Enforcement Office will contract with a weed cutting contractor to cut the weeds. A bill for the weed cutting and administrative costs will then be sent to the property owner by certified mail. If the owner does not pay that bill, a copy of the costs along with certification that the property owner has been notified will be sent to the County Treasurer with a request to have the amount placed as a lien against the property.

    Business Licensing
  • In accordance with Senate Bill 081 that took effect on May 9, 2017, the City of North Salt Lake will no longer require a city business license and fee for home businesses that meet the following criteria: 1. Home businesses that are operated only occasionally and by an individual under 18 years of age; or 2. Regardless of home occupation licensure, all home occupations are required to comply with NSL Code Section 10-10-5, Home Occupations, as amended. However, the City of North Salt Lake recognizes that some home business owners desire to obtain a yearly business license despite being exempt from licensure and fee. Those business owners may voluntarily request a yearly business license at a processing cost of $25.00 annually. The Home Business License Application can be found here
    Business Licensing
