2023 Proposed Tax Rate Increase:
South Davis Metro Fire Service Area (Metro Fire) is a full-service fire department providing ambulance, paramedic, fire, technical rescue, and hazardous materials responses to the cities of Bountiful, Centerville, North Salt Lake, West Bountiful, Woods Cross, and unincorporated areas of South Davis County. We serve an estimated population of 120,000 and responded to over 7,600 calls in 2022 from our five fire stations.
Why is the Proposed Tax Rate Increase Needed for South Davis Metro Fire?
In January 2023, Metro Fire conducted a third-party salary market survey. The result of this survey determined the department compensation was trailing the market average by as much as 17%. Along with other sectors of public safety across our nation, Metro Fire is experiencing challenges in retaining staff. Since July 1st, 2022, South Davis Metro Fire has lost 10 employees to other agencies due to more competitive salaries. As a result, an adjustment would be needed to become more competitive and aid in retaining highly trained employees. This proposed tax rate increase will fund the wages and benefits associated with the salary market increase and positively affect employee retention.
On Monday, August 7th, 2023, the South Davis Metro Fire Board of Directors held a public hearing regarding the tax increase. After public comment, the Board then voted 4-1 in favor of the tax increase and adopted the final fiscal year 23-24 budget which included an 18% increase.
We appreciate your continued support, and we will continue to live up to our Mission Statement of “To Preserve Life, Protect Property, and Exceed the Expectations of Those We Serve.”
